a) CHECK your finalist status on our website. Finalists should take the following steps.
b) CONFIRM the participation of each participant by logging into project application system. This is REQUIRED for ALL participants, including supervisors. Provide participant information correctly and pay the non-refundable participant fee per participant (including supervisors) in order to confirm your participation (Deadline May 21st).
c) PROVIDE name, email, and birth date for each participant who will attend the GENIUS Olympiad. This information must be entered within the application system under the “participant information” tab. Invitation letters for visa purposes will be provided when this information is submitted and fees for all participants are paid (including any guest fees). INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPANTS: Please request an invitation letter by clicking the button on the participant information list when you have entered all participants and made your fee payments. We will send one invitation letter for the group by email. The sooner you provide your information and fees, the sooner you will receive your letter. The guests MUST have paid in order to receive an invitation letter.
d) DECIDE whether you will attend the Terra Discovery Washington DC and NY City Trip and/or the Ivy League Tour (optional, Deadline: May 21st). See section 11 below for more information. NEW! We will provide bus service ($60, June 12th at 7 pm) from JFK to Oswego for those who will register at trip only (see item #13 for more information). You MUST pay the required fee by May 21st in order to be eligible for the trip. We have only 140 seats available for DC/NY and 50 seats for the Ivy League Tour, distributed on a first-come first-served basis based on fee payments.
e) SUBMIT your Travel Information (Deadline: June 5th) using the “Travel information” tab in the application system. This information should be submitted only once for the project by the group supervisor. Please check our free shuttle service from Syracuse Airport, which is ONLY available at the specified times, before you make your purchases.
f) RULES & MEDIA AGREEMENT: By participating into GENIUS Olympiad, you agree to all the rules stated on this document and to the media agreement stated in item #15.
- Science and Design projects will be provided a 40x60" (100x150cm) empty display area and a 30(d)x60"(w) (45x150cm) table, with a 40x60” (100x150cm) white foam board, if needed. You are allowed to bring your own display board (which is recommended) in any size and height as long as it can be secured on the table by itself.
- You may bring paper copies, tri-fold, or large print boards which can be taped onto the provided foam board or placed on the table.
- Tables are provided for those with demos and prototypes as part of their display. Electric outlets (110 Volts) will be provided on an as-needed basis. We will NOT provide 220 Volts. Only some tables have electric outlets, therefore please ask for a table with an electric outlet if you need one.
- Short Movie Projects will be provided a computer and a projector for screening. You must bring your movie on a disk or storage to transfer into our computers.
- All ART posters MUST be between 18x24” (46x61 cm). Black foam board of 22x28 inches and an easel will be provided. Art Finalists must physically bring artwork with them to ensure the quality is as intended.
- Creative writing will be presented by reading in Campus Center 114, which is separate from the main display area. GENIUS will also display all writings and provide a booklet of the writings in the main area for the public and participants.
- Bring electronic copies of your documents on a flash drive. If something goes wrong, you will need these for last-minute printouts.
- The project set-up deadline is 3:00 PM Tuesday, June 13, 2017.
- We recommend that you personally bring your project display materials with you. For those who prefer to ship their display materials, please use the address below, with the following instructions:
- Make sure that you have your name printed on the shipment in large format.
- Your shipment must arrive at the following address between June 4th and 9th.
- Your shipment will be brought to the display area (Campus arena).
- You are responsible for the return of your project materials. The campus has a FedEx and UPS store in the basement of Hewitt Union for your shipment needs. This address can NOT be used to ship personal items to participants. The campus does not provide mail service for participants. We will not be responsible for any personable mail lost.

6- £ International-to-US outlet converter for your charging needs (computer, cell phones etc.). We will sell these converters at your arrival.
7- £ Business/formal attire and traditional cultural attire (optional) for opening and award ceremonies.
8- £ Sweaters for chilly nights: Oswego weather will be 65-90 F (20-32oC) during the day and will be 55-70 F (13-22oC) at night.
9- £ Cash in U.S. currency for shopping at on-campus shops. The campus center has several ATM machines.
1. GENIUS Olympiad provides dorm accommodations for finalists and their supervisors during the event. Participants will stay in double bedrooms with no air conditioning. Linens will be provided. Participants will stay at Cayuga and Seneca Halls on the SUNY Oswego Campus. Note that Oswego Campus is smoking free campus, therefore smoking is NOT allowed on campus premises.
2. Due to a new NY State law and liabilities, the children under the age of 12 will NOT be offered housing on campus. Parents with a minor should arrange their own accommodation within nearby hotels.
3. For the security and providing a good rest, the doors of the dorm building will be locked at 1 am. Also, NO one will be allowed to socialize in the common areas after 12.00 am.
4. All halls, where accommodation, dining, and events take place are accessible for disabled participants.
5. Participants will be placed in the rooms with another GENIUS Olympiad participant of the same gender. Students may be roomed with another student from the same school or from another school. Supervisors may be roomed with another supervisor as well. If a student attends the event with his/her parent, they may be roomed together. Male and female participants will be placed on separate floors. Room assignments will be given at registration during your arrival. Please do not email us regarding your rooming requests.
6. Dorms have community bathrooms (separate for males and females). Towels and personal hygiene products (soap, shower gels, toothpaste, etc.) will NOT be provided by the GENIUS Olympiad. You are advised to bring all your personal hygiene products for a week.
7. PETS are NOT allowed in the dorms.
8. GENIUS Olympiad provides meals, which are stated on the schedule. Please see our updated schedule on our website before your arrival. All participants are responsible for their personal expenses other than what will be provided by GENIUS Olympiad. Meals are open buffet style, including salad and sandwich bars, and hot item bar. There will be good selections of vegetarian items for our participants.
9. Parents, teachers, a close relative can be adult supervisors accompanying students during the event. One supervisor may accompany several students.
10. Free Wi-Fi will be available for GENIUS Olympiad participants on campus and in dorm rooms.
11. Guests who are not registered and did not pay the $600 fee should arrange their own accommodations. They are required to pay $350 for on-campus meals and the Niagara Falls trip.
12. Additional guest accommodation is subject to availability.
13. GENIUS Olympiad will NOT provide any transportation or shuttle to or from any hotels. Please check the Centro Oswego summer bus schedule, which serves the campus within Oswego, at http://www.centro.org/oswegoschedules.aspx
14. GENIUS will provide a fee-based shuttle service according to a schedule to local stores, such as Price Choppers (pharmacy and grocery store), TJ-Maxx (discount store), and Walmart (general merchandise and electronics). Kinneys Pharmacy and general merchandise store is walking distance from campus.
15. For early arrivals and late departures, please arrange your own hotel accommodations. GENIUS Olympiad participants can NOT stay longer than the event dates on campus due to other programs. Nearby hotels to SUNY Oswego:

SECURITY: Each participant will be given a room key and a building electronic key, called a “fob”. Please make sure you have your keys and fob on you at all times. The Resident Assistants will be monitoring building exits. If you see anyone and or anything that seems out of the ordinary, please report it to a staff member immediately.
HOURS of BUILDING: For the security and providing a good rest, the doors of the dorm building will be locked at 1.00 am. In addition, NO one will be allowed to socialize in the common areas after 12.00 am.
KEYS-LOCKED OUTS: If you happen to get locked out of your room, please stop by the Hall Front Desk for assistance. Each lost key is $15, and each lost Fob is $25.
Desk hours: The front desk will have 24 hour staffing from 10:00 AM Monday until 6:00 PM Saturday. Please visit the desk with any questions or concerns and a staff member will help you.
Trash Disposal/Recycling Room: The recycling room is located in the basement of Hall. Please be sure to properly dispose of garbage and recyclables. The recycling room is open from 8am to 10pm.
Alcohol Policy: If you are under 21 years of age, you are prohibited from possessing or consuming alcohol. If you are 21 years old or older, you may have a maximum 12 cans of beer OR 750 ml of liquor OR 1.5 liters of wine.
Smoking Policy: Smoking is strictly prohibited in all college buildings. Oswego Campus is a SMOKING FREE Campus, therefore you are NOT allowed to smoke on campus premises.
Bathrooms: Please be sure to dispose of all toilet paper appropriately and maintain a clean environment for you and your fellow floor mates. Please use bathrooms marked with your gender ONLY.
Laundry: The laundry room with washing machines and driers is located in the basement of Hall. If you wish to hand wash your clothes, please use sinks in laundry room ONLY.
VIDEO/MUSIC SHARING: Make sure to delete or turn off automatic file share programs (like Kazaa, Bit Torrent, Gnutella, or Limewire) on your computer/tablets using peer-to-peer programs before using on campus. This could impose civil and criminal penalties including fines, jail time, and lawyer’s fees. Here is further information.
Emergency Procedures: Fire Drills/Alarms
Evacuation route: Please do not use the elevators in the event of a fire alarm. Please take the north or south stairwells to exit the building. Be sure to move 50 feet away from the building to ensure your personal safety.
Students with Disabilities: If you cannot navigate the stairs, please wait at the top of the stairwell on your floor for fire safety personnel or a University Police Officer to assist you in exiting the building.
Fire Safety Equipment: There are fire extinguishers/pull boxes located on each floor in case of an emergency.
Free black/white printing (regular US paper size only, which is different than European paper size) is provided ONLY at printers provided by GENIUS Olympiad in Seneca residence hall and Campus Center project display area.
HOURS: Monday – Friday: 8 Am – 9 PM.
COMPUTERS: There are 22 computers on the first floor and 22 computers in the 24-Hour study room. Please note that printing in the library is allowed only for Oswego students and faculty. For your printing needs, please talk to a GENIUS Representative.
BOOKS, MUSIC, & FILM: The following items can be used only in the library: More than 450,000 books and a large selection of CDs, film, and reading collection. Please speak to a librarian at the help desk to use any resources.
NOTE: Library does NOT provide printing services for participants. Please utilize only GENIUS program printers.
Supervisors who accompany students must provide travel information about all participants who are coming to GENIUS Olympiad as a group/school. Please purchase your tickets before you provide this information to us.
This information will be used to make our check-in table available when you arrive in Oswego. This information does not guarantee that you will be picked up from the airport unless you arrive at the scheduled shuttle times or request a fee-based pickup service for your group.
Participants are responsible for their own travel expenses to attend the GENIUS Olympiad event.
Travel by air: The closest airport to SUNY Oswego is SYRACUSE HANCOCK AIRPORT (40 miles). GENIUS Olympiad will provide seven free shuttle services from the airport ONLY ON MONDAY, June 12th, starting at 11.00 am until late midnight 12.30 am. The bus will leave the airport as it gets full. GENIUS Olympiad representatives will welcome you at the airport and direct you to transportation services. IF you are planning to attend DC/NYC trip after genius, your arrival airport can be JFK. Please read item #13 for more information.
Return Shuttles to Syracuse Airport and Bus/Train Terminal: FRIDAY June 16th at 4.30 pm, and SATURDAY June 17th at 4 am, 7 am, 9.30 am, and 12 pm (note that it takes 1 hr from Oswego to the airport). Those who will take the Terra Discovery DC/NY City trip will be dropped either at JFK on MONDAY June 19th by 10 am, or at Syracuse Airport by 4 pm. Those participating in the Ivy League Tour will be dropped either at Boston Logan airport on June 22nd by 10 am, or at Syracuse Airport by 4 pm.
Travel by train/bus: You should arrange to arrive at the Syracuse train/bus terminal. Amtrak (train services) or Greyhound or MegaBus (bus services) (and other bus transportation companies See below for more information) serve this terminal. GENIUS Olympiad will provide free shuttle service from train/bus terminal to SUNY-Oswego campus ONLY ON MONDAY, June 12th in the same schedule with the airport shuttles (the shuttle will stop by at the terminal if there are participants). If you use this option, make sure to let us know ahead of time.
Travel by car: Please arrive at Cayuga Hall of SUNY Oswego 20 Cayuga Circle, Oswego, NY 13126. You will have free parking behind Cayuga Hall (Parking lot #R12). For the campus map and parking information, please read the parking information section.
Shuttle Service during the event: GENIUS Olympiad will provide free shuttle service for the Niagara Falls trip. There will be FEE-BASED shuttle service to nearby shopping malls within Oswego according to a fixed schedule. There will be no shuttle service for guests staying at nearby hotels, or for in-town shopping. Please check the Centro Oswego summer bus schedule at http://www.centro.org/oswegoschedules.aspx
Step 1: Take the JFK air train (terminal train) and go to the subway that is located in the airport (it is called Jamaica Station).
Step 2: Take the A TRAIN that goes towards Manhattan.
Step 3: Disembark (i.e., Leave) from the subway at the Port Authority station (or it is also called the 42nd street station).
IMMUNIZATION RECORD: The New York State Department of Health requires all participants attending programs at college campuses show proof of adequate immunization for measles, mumps, and rubella. It is mandatory a participant have a copy of their official immunization record from their health care provider showing adequate immunity for measles, mumps, and rubella. In the event of the measles, mumps, or rubella outbreak, participants without an immunization record will be quarantined for 7-21 days (depending on disease outbreak).
Specific requirements are proof of the following vaccines: two measles, mumps, and rubella (2 x MMR) vaccine after your first birthday. A blood test (MMR titer) is also acceptable if it shows adequate immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella. Official immunization records or MMR titer test must show name, date of birth, and date of immunizations, along with health care provider signature or stamp. Individuals with medical exemptions must have a letter from their health care provider of the reasons for a medical exemption. Religious exemptions must be addressed in a writing from a parent (if the student is a minor) or from the student if 18 and above.
Individuals traveling from tuberculosis endemic countries must show proof of a negative Mantoux test or negative chest x-ray. This is expected at the time of your arrival to SUNY Oswego. Thank you for complying with the New York State Department of Health requirements. We look forward to your attendance at SUNY Oswego.
HEALTH INSURANCE: The U.S. health system does not provide free health care, therefore it is HIGHLY recommended for international participants to purchase travel health insurance. You may purchase travel insurance from www.insuremytrip.com for $30-50 per person. GENIUS Olympiad is not affiliated with this company and you may choose to purchase your insurance from other companies. GENIUS Olympiad will NOT cover any health related expenses of any of its participants. Emergency care is NOT free and very expense, therefore it is highly advised to have emergency trip health insurance.
During judging hours GENIUS Olympiad and SUNY Oswego will provide several educational activities for groups not currently being judged. These are designed to educate students and participants about environment, learning, and education. The topics and the presenters will be announced on our website. All participants of the program will receive a GENIUS Olympiad symposium certificate.
TERRA Foundation, our sponsor, offers an optional field trip to Washington, D.C. and New York City from June 16-19 for a fee of $600 per person, and an Ivy League Tour from June 19-22 for $600 per person. Both trips combined cost $1000 per person. The fees include transportation, lodging, and breakfast. All other expenses, including lunch and dinner, must be paid by participants. Participants in the DC/NY tour will be dropped either at JFK airport in New York City by 10 am, or at Syracuse Hancock airport by 4 pm, or at Oswego by 5 pm after the trip program on Sunday, or they can continue with the Ivy League Tour. Participants in the Ivy League Tour will be dropped off at Boston Logan Airport by 10 am, or at Syracuse Airport at 4 pm, or at Oswego at 5 pm after the trip program on June 22nd. Please check our website for more information about the Terra Discovery Trips. If you plan to participate in Terra Discovery Trips, please arrange your return flight dates and airport accordingly. Seats are limited for this trip, and are provided on a first-come, first-served basis according to payment. For more information, please visit our trips section of the website.
NEW!! If you are attending DC/NYC trip, you may arrive at JFK airport. We will provide fee-based bus service on Monday, June 12th leaving JFK at 7 pm from a set terminal. It will be $60 per person, and you must pay for it ahead of time during participant registration. This bus will be available ONLY for those who will attend DC/NYC trip. The registration for the JFK bus pickup service is done via participant registration page within application site. The latest day for registration for the bus service is May 21st.

Participation in the GENIUS Olympiad implies that you accept the following rules and conditions.
I give permission for my child/myself be filmed/photographed/interviewed by the media and/or the organizer during GENIUS Olympiad and for them to use my (or my child’s) photograph, work, voice for promotional and educational purposes, such as in publications, posters, brochures and newsletters; on the GENIUS web site, radio station or TV.
I have read and understood the official Code of Conduct of GENIUS Olympiad (available on the application site) and agree to abide by the rules contained therein. I understand that violation of any rule explained above will result in my project’s immediate disqualification and removal of eligibility for all awards. I shall indemnify, defend and hold GENIUS Olympiad and organizers of GENIUS Olympiad harmless from and against any negligence in any case due to, illness or any form of harassment anywhere programs or events of GENIUS Olympiad takes place including but not limited to SUNY Oswego Campus.
GENIUS Olympiad CODE of CONDUCT
Participation in the activities of GENIUS Olympiad offers many perks and privileges. At the same time finalists, adult supervisors, and guests are expected to fulfill certain responsibilities and obligations, including complying with this Code of Conduct of GENIUS Olympiad.
In this policy “GENIUS Olympiad” will mean “Global Environmental Issues Project Olympiad”, “finalist” will refer to any young person who has been chosen to attend GENIUS Olympiad, “adult chosen/authorized to accompany the finalist.
3.1 GENIUS Olympiad will provide an environment in which all individuals are treated with respect. GENIUS Olympiad does not discriminate based on gender, age, national origin, ethnicity, religion, economic status, disability, political belief, sexual orientation, academic, artistic, or athletic ability.
3.2 Participants in GENIUS Olympiad’s programs and activities will conduct themselves in a manner consistent with this Code of Conduct of GENIUS Olympiad. GENIUS Olympiad reserves the right to disqualify any participant of GENIUS Olympiad from any or all activities, who is deemed in violation of any conduct of this code of GENIUS Olympiad.
3.3 All persons involved in GENIUS Olympiad will:
a) maintain and enhance the dignity and self-esteem of participants in GENIUS Olympiad events;
b) demonstrate respect for individuals regardless of gender, ethnic or racial origin, sexual orientation, age, marital status, religion, political belief, disability or economic status;
c) direct comments or criticism appropriately and avoid public criticism of, but not limited to, finalists, judges, delegates, committee members, volunteers, adult supervisors, guests, staff and members of GENIUS Olympiad;
d) demonstrate ethical conduct and practices.
e) abstain from tobacco, alcohol, and the non-medical use of drugs;
f) refrain from any behavior that constitutes harassment, where harassment is defined as comment or conduct, directed towards an individual or group, which is offensive, abusive, racist, sexist, degrading or malicious;
g) refrain from any behavior that constitutes sexual harassment, defined as unwelcome sexual advances or unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature;
h) comply at all times with the policies, rules, and regulations of GENIUS Olympiad.
i) make sure to maintain appropriate attire in all programs and events of GENIUS Olympiad.
j) be courteous and cooperative when asked by GENIUS Olympiad organizing committee to share a room.
3.4 All adults at GENIUS OLYMPIAD events will:
a) abstain from the use of alcohol and tobacco where minors are present;
b) ensure the reasonable consumption of alcoholic beverages in social situations where minors are not present.
c) ensure that expectations for finalist behavior and conduct are made clear to the finalists in their charge;
d) provide supervision for the finalists in their charge in a manner that fulfills what a judicious parent would expect. While adults are not expected to be physically present with their finalists 24 hours a day, finalists should have physical access to their adult supervisor 24 hours a day;
e) provide supervision and or assistance to other finalists at GENIUS OLYMPIAD events when the need arises or if help is requested by a finalist or another delegate;
f) communicate and cooperate with the parents/guardians of finalists and ensure that parents/guardians are aware of the expectations for their children at the GENIUS OLYMPIAD event and the range of consequences for misbehavior by a finalist.
g) understand the consequences of serious misbehavior as described in this code of conduct of GENIUS OLYMPIAD.
3.5 Finalists will:
a) support and cooperate with every member of their Regional or National Team.
b) adhere to the expectations set out in writing for them by their Regional Delegate or supervisor;
c) attend and participate in all activities, tours, and events that are part of GENIUS OLYMPIAD;
d) be punctual at all GENIUS OLYMPIAD activities and events;
e) attend their displays at all times during the judging period and during the period GENIUS OLYMPIAD is open to the public;
f) ensure that their delegate or adult supervisor knows at all times where they are and with whom;
g) obtain their delegate or adult supervisor’s explicit permission before leaving the group;
h) respect all curfews explained to them by their delegate or supervisor;
i) get sufficient sleep.
j) understand the consequences of serious misbehavior as described in this code of conduct of GENIUS OLYMPIAD.
k) not engage in any activity that will bring the moral tone of any GENIUS OLYMPIAD events into disrepute.
